CHARACTER NAME: Mikumo Guynemer
CANON: Macross Delta (TV series canon)
CANON POINT: Post-Episode 26, so shortly after Mikumo is rescued from the Temple of Stars at the end of the series.
AGE: Mikumo is a clone, so she has existed for 3 years but is physically and mentally equivalent to a 20 year old. I base her equivalent/intended age on a couple of details from canon - the main one is that at the start of the series, the other members of her group Walkure are 14, 16, 18 and 22 respectively, which leaves a logical spot for Mikumo to be 20. The other factors are in her design compared to the rest of Walkure, as shown in this image: comparing her appearance to the others, age-wise she looks like she falls between Makina (pink hair, 18) and Kaname (dark red hair, 22); in addition, the characters 18 and over (Makina, Kaname, and Mikumo) have costume designs that tend to play into that, in contrast to the younger members.
BACKGROUND: -The Macross franchise begins with a war between humans and aliens called the Zentradi in the early 2000s that renders much of Earth uninhabitable, with human colony ships being sent out to find new habitable planets. One of these lands on the planet Ragna in the Brisingr Globular Cluster about 30 years before the start of Macross Delta (2067).
-The Brisingr Cluster, for at least 3-5 years prior to 2067, is dealing with Var Syndrome, a condition involving an alien bacteria driving people to mindless violence when activated. Research into a cure shows the bacteria have "Fold Waves" that cause the condition, and so people with "Fold Receptors" are immune, and some can also spread this immunity/reverse Var through singing.
-Private military contractor Xaos forms the "Tactical Sound Unit" Walkure, who sing to cure Var. As they need more power behind them, "Lady M", a mysterious benefactor, orders a clone to be made using stolen genetic material from an ancient Protoculture (a 500000 year old civilisation that seeded all humanoid life) priestess called the Star Singer.
-The resulting clone, Mikumo, is made the lead singer of Walkure 2 or so years prior to canon start, working alongside Xaos' Delta Platoon for protection. They successfully combat Var outbreaks, but there is still no sign of the source until shortly after a new member joins Walkure; Freyja, a girl from the planet Windermere.
-After Freyja joins, Var outbreaks begin to be triggered more frequently by a mysterious song. This is revealed to be Windermere's prince (later king), the Wind Singer, and Windermere declares war on the New United Nations Government, who they believe are exploiting the Brisingr Cluster.
-Over the course of the war, Mikumo (and Freyja) begin to resonate with Protoculture relics that turn out to be key to spreading the Wind Singer's song, and Windermerean control. After she resonates with one powerfully enough to free an entire planet from mind control (using Var + the amplified Wind Singer), she becomes catatonic and upon her recovery, is told of her origins as a clone/artificial human, triggering a conflict of identity.
-Around the same time, Windermere's head of government, Roid Brehm, finds out what Mikumo is and captures her when Walkure and Delta Platoon attempt to infiltrate Windermere. Using a code phrase passed down the royal family, he reveals her identity as the Star Singer and takes control of her.
-While initially using her for mere mind control, Roid takes Mikumo to the Temple of Stars, the Star Singer's ultimate stage, which would allow her to turn the whole Brisingr Cluster into a hive mind, "evolving" into a new form. The other Windermerean forces turn on him to avoid this fate, working with Xaos and Walkure to rescue Mikumo and end Roid's ambitions. Mikumo is broken free of Roid's control by Freyja and Walkure reaching out to her and is able to return to them, and Windermere are forced to retreat and consider peace negotiations.
SUITABILITY: While Mikumo has very much been focused on her work previously, she's already very used to the constant observation that comes with fame in a future setting, and also marketing oneself through sex appeal. One of the most blatant canon instances is when she and the rest of Walkure need to deliberately grab as much audience attention as possible for a mission, so they run a live broadcast that opens with Mikumo in an incredibly skimpy armoured costume - she knows how to use streams to her advantage, and use what she has. While she hasn't canonically gone further than that or questionable song lyrics, at her current canonpoint, she's interested in seeking more experiences to flesh out her identity and her singing. This means she's much more open to trying new things now, and even things she's hesitant about initially she often comes around to with only a little time to consider (such as when she initially makes excuses to not eat in front of Makina and Reina since she's never done that before, but relents when they tease her a bit about it). She also tries to retain an air of confidence about things even when she doesn't quite know how to handle it, which means in a situation like this she's most prone to try to familiarise herself with the more sexual side of SIN as quickly as possible so that confidence can become real rather than faked. Even if she may be straightforward about lacking experience with something, she seeks improvement when she sees herself being not as confident or skilled at it as she'd like (such as when Freyja casually observes that Mikumo's singing has changed while she's having an identity crisis, and Mikumo immediately presses her for details), so as absurd as the situation might be in some respects, she'll still challenge herself to excel at her new role. Which in this case, means adapting to the game environment and making sure she's engaging as fully as she can to achieve her goal - and likely coming back to her canon habit of pushing others to be better as well, ultimately helping them engage more with the setting. She'll already be acting from the outset to assist in certain ways and make sure people aren't taking things too lightly, since they all have something on the line.
Mikumo is more social as of her current canonpoint than she used to be, and she's definitely used to social media and being "on" for fans, so is much more prone to actively appeal on stage or on stream than in person. This is shown in situations like Freyja's first performance, where she smiles and cheers for the audience, taking on an almost bubbly energy, then covers her mic to remind Freyja that her position in Walkure is on the line if she messes up the performance. She canonically already plays that contrast between on stream/live and her true personality, generally being more blunt and emotionally closed, so is capable of playing herself up on social media and engaging with people much more than she would normally in order to maintain her appeal. And even if the social media she's used to from 2067 isn't quite the same as what's present in game, there's some similar beats there that she's certainly seen (from instances such as her teammate Makina "fundraising" via distributing gravures to generate clicks and income), as well as her propensity for people-watching lending itself to learning other nuances fast. She observes people and picks up behaviour patterns easily, being canonically extremely good at espionage work - in comparison to that, adapting to a more 2024 social media environment will likely be an easy time for her. She's also willing to make excuses and set up situations to engage with others for the sake of driving improvement (such as her early canon schemes to draw out Freyja's developing talents), which in a social media and collaboration environment could lead to some potentially entertaining results.
CHARACTER ARC PLANS: The watch words here are "identity" and "experiences" - Mikumo only finds out very late in canon that she's a clone (around 5 episodes before the end of a 26 episode series), and gets minimal time to figure out how to approach the fact before she gets kidnapped. However, it's clear from her reactions that it's given her an identity struggle, and there's very much a desire to distinguish herself as herself instead of a copy of the Star Singer, particularly in the wake of reverting to the Star Singer while under Windermerean control. I want to give her the chance to do that in this game, finding more of what she's interested in and who she is outside of the work she was created for, and without Walkure around her. This also ties into the idea of having more experiences; not long after she finds out she's a clone, Makina tells her that she wants to see how Mikumo gaining more and more experiences will affect her singing (and implicitly her as a person). Mikumo is on the precipice of being able to do this at the end of canon, stepping forward to a future less controlled by the demands of constant Var outbreaks and her duty to protect people, but a setting like this will let her lean further into engaging with as many experiences as she can, both of the more sexual variety and simply those that other characters bring to the table with their interests and collaborations. The overall idea is just giving her the space to explore herself and try new things, while still having something to work towards but not the kind of constant conflict she's used to dealing with back home.
COLLATERAL: Selected by the Sinducer - as her wish is to reverse Freyja's crystallisation so she can continue singing with Walkure, the collateral is Freyja losing the ability to sing. This crystallisation is a process Windermereans go through as they burn through energy, which after first appearing can quickly progress and end their life prematurely if they overextend themselves; Freyja's has begun at the age of 15 when an average Windermerean lifespan is 30.
ADDITIONAL CONTRACT CLAUSES: N/A
PERSONALITY: Determined, courageous, insightful, blunt, enigmatic, proud.
INVENTORY: -A holographic bodysuit that allows her to change outfits at will using hard light holograms, so they have actual substance. She can also change hair (and eye) colours and styles with it and add minor features to herself (e.g. markings) for disguise use, but it cannot change the structure of her body or face. Severe damage will deactivate it (a character has theirs shut down after being shot), but since it returns to a gel form when removed all but very widespread damage would be easily fixed. When activated, it's completely invisible besides the outfits it's generating, but when deactivated it basically looks like a pink bodysuit made out of semi-transparent gel.
-A belt of very small jump packs that seem to have a constant fuel source of some kind, though it's never specified what it actually is because Future Tech (tm). It allows Mikumo to boost her jumps to the point of being able to leap up onto buildings of maybe 5 storeys at highest, or can be used after jumping from higher points to maintain a certain height temporarily/slow her descent, but cannot be used to actually fly.
-A set of nail overlays/fake nails that function as a phone and computer using a holographic display and touch commands. They can pick up the broadcast TV signals in her world, interface with networked devices, and overall do most things one would expect from a modern smartphone.
-One small bug-shaped robot that she keeps in a round white case. It's a bug in both senses - she can use it to capture film and audio and then play it back by interfacing with the case or her nails.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: -Mikumo has various enhancements engineered into her, including senses sharper than those of a normal human (she mentions this after she finds out she's a clone), and enhanced strength, resilience and agility (able to take out trained Windermerean, a humanoid species who are naturally of higher strength, perception, etc. than humans but die early in exchange, soldiers in one strike, and seemingly able to jump around 3-4 times the height and distance of a normal human unassisted).
-She was also created as a musical weapon, cloned from an ancient priestess called the Star Singer. Her voice has the ability to essentially reach into people's hearts more effectively than normal music - if she sings with a certain emotion behind it, it can influence people to feel that emotion (the canon has people unaffected or less affected by it, which opens it to being case-by-case in a game setting).
-It's implied a few times (by scenes of her basically hanging out underwater with no equipment of any kind) she's able to breathe underwater.
-On the more mundane side of things, Mikumo is a skilled combatant (likely with firearms experience considering she works with a civilian military contractor and has battlefield-related training) and also highly experienced in espionage work and blending into even completely new environments.
-As someone designed to perform, she's unsurprisingly a performer stated to far outstrip just about anyone else in her galaxy and time period, particularly with singing ability but also in dance.
-Mikumo has "fold receptors", making her immune to the effects of fold bacteria (a type of bacteria that use a sort of telepathic communication) and Var Syndrome. Because fold receptors are explained as essentially a neutraliser to fold waves, the aforementioned telepathic communication, she may have some immunity/resistance to similar forms of telepathic suggestion.
GAMEBREAKING POWERS? Her gamebreaking powers should be impossible to use in-setting anyway, but I'll add them here just in case - when amplified by a Protoculture relic (which are too large and planet-bound to be likely to show up in game), Mikumo's singing can send people into a state of catatonia, obedience (and/or frenzy if she activates latent Var Syndrome), and eventually subsume anyone listening into a hive mind. These relics can also project her voice over whole planets or when combined, galaxy-wide, but are restricted to her home galaxy. She has also never used these powers willingly, and the only people who can compel her to do so are members of the Windermerean royal line.
